find a good Chinese translator

How can I find a good Chinese translator or interpreter?

Your Chinese client has suddenly decided to pay you an unscheduled visit en-route to a trade fair in Munich. A new Chinese standard has just landed on your desk, which according to your contact at the Chamber of Commerce, will affect how you export your products.

After consulting Google, you realise Chinese is not something you can learn overnight. How inconvenient. Panic sets in. What to do? Where can you find good Chinese translators and interpreters?

Most people would run straight to the first translation agency they find via a search engine. But should you? Have you ever thought about working directly with translators and interpreters? This article sets out the advantages and disadvantages of working with both.

Should you go with a translation agency or work directly with interpreters/translators?

Working directly with translators and interpreters:

Advantages

  • Direct access - you have direct access to a Chinese translator/interpreter who can provide immediate advise on the most cost-effective solution based on your needs and circumstances. That direct access is maintained throughout and it is especially important to projects and events that are associated with many variables.
  • Transparency and consistency – you always know the full credential of the translator/interpreter that is assisting you. If you are happy with their service, you may want to use them again. It is crucial to work with a translator/interpreter you know and trust. It is equally important for them to develop an understanding of your business. That relationship guarantees quality and delivers result. Just like the good relationship you have with your clients generates profit and success.
  • Professional and competitively priced – independent interpreters and translators have much lower overheads. Their rates are based on their expertise and experience. You can be sure that you are working with the best talent at the most competitive rate.

Disadvantages

  • Independent interpreters and translators are efficient at managing bilingual or small multilingual projects. However, for large multilingual projects with half a dozen languages or more, you need a dedicated project manager to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Using a translation agency:

Advantages

  • Dedicated project management for large projects – translation agencies have the resources to manage large-scale multilingual projects.

Disadvantages

  • Have to go through a go-between - you deal with a project manager at the translation agency who may not be a language professional and probably cannot speak Chinese. They act as a go-between conveying your message to the translator/interpreter and theirs to you. Things can be distorted or misunderstood in the process.
  • Lack of transparency and continuity - you won’t know the name of the translator or have direct access to them. You won’t be able to get in touch directly with the excellent interpreter who worked for you on the last project. Everything is just that little bit out of your reach.
  • Inconsistent quality and higher costs – some translation agencies are undoubtedly professional and ethical. There are many we are happy to recommend. However, a large number of translation agencies are now so set on maximising profit they are doing so at the expense of quality. Some are even blacklisted by some of the most qualified translators/interpreters who now refuse to work for them.
